Emanuel-Newton-Bellator 130

MULVANE, Kan. – Emanuel Newton retains his Bellator Light Heavyweight Title with a win by submission in the fifth round over Linton Vassell in the main event at Bellator 130 Friday night in Mulvane, Kansas. The win was in a championship come-from-behind fashion in which the champ remained steady as the challenger faded.

Vassell dominated the first two rounds on the mat with a relentless ground attack in which he landed 10 more strikes than the champ and had three submission attempts. However, “The Hardcore Kid” turned the tide in round three as he nailed the takedown and then kept “The Swarm” on the ground landing 23 strikes in the round to Vassell’s eight. Newton continued his assault in round four landing 60 strikes in the round after getting the takedown. Newton transitioned into back control and sunk in a rear-naked choke early in round five to move to 25-7, dropping Vassell to 14-4.

Bobby Lashley improved to 12-2 with a first round knockout win over Karl Etherington in the heavyweight bout on the night. Both fighters spent time grinding each other to the cage before “The Wrecking Machine” missed on a judo throw that sent both to the mat with “The Dominator” in the dominant position. Lashley unleashed a barrage of strikes before the fight was stopped with Etherington falling to 9-1, taking his first loss.

Marloes Coenen made good on her Bellator debut while ruining Annalisa Bucci’s with a third round submission by rear-naked choke. Coenen moved to 22-6 by dominating the fight scoring three takedowns and out-striking Bucci by a 46-8 margin before grabbing the submission win. In the loss Bucci falls to 7-4.

Dave Jansen moved to 20-2 with a unanimous decision win over Rick Hawn in which he set the tone early and stuck with it unleashing a kicking clinic that kept “Genghis” Hawn at bay. “The Fugitive” out-struck Hawn 87-51 as he drops Hawn to 18-4.
