- Updated: September 18, 2014
No. 9 middleweight contender C.B. Dollaway (16-6) will get the opportunity to headline an event for the first time in the Ultimate Fighting Championship as he will face former champion Lyoto Machida (21-5) at a UFC Fight Night event on December 20th.
Dollaway got his start in UFC coming out of The Ulitmate Fighter with a loss to Amir Sadollah (7-4) but has since made an impressive run. “The Doberman” has was four of his last five fights including being undefeated in 2014. The Ohio native won his last fight at UFC Fight Night Munoz vs. Mousasi in a unanimous decision win over No. 15 Francis “Limitless” Carmont (22-10) in which he had 15 more strikes and a 3-to-1 takedown advantage.
Coming from a wrestling background, Dollaway has developed an exciting stand up game just in time for this matchup with “The Dragon” who comes from a Karate background but is also known for unconventional striking ability that tends to frustrate ground and pound type of fighters.
The Brazilian’s last fight was a five round loss by unanimous decision to middleweight champion Chris Weidman (12-0) at UFC 175 in which he was out-struck by seven strikes and was taken down five times without returning the favor. Before the loss, Machida had won two straight including a fight earlier in 2014 over No. 8 contender Gegard Mousasi (35-5-2) by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night Machida vs. Mousasi in February even though he was out-struck by eight strikes but did lead one takedown to none.
Machida has become accustomed to being the headline fighter and has been in matches with many top UFC fighters with bouts with the likes of Dan Henderson, current Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones, Randy Couture, Rampage Jackson, Mauricio Rua, Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz.
Dollaway looks to take win his debut as a UFC headliner but will have an experienced, big fight striker in Machida to go through to get there.
