UFC Fight Night 51: Pitbull KOs Bigfoot In First Round
- Updated: September 14, 2014
BRASILIA, Brazil – No. 14 UFC heavyweight contender Andrei “Pitbull” Arlovski (23-10, 1 NC) knocks out No. 4 contender Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (18-6, 1 NC) in the first round of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Fight Night 51 main event Saturday night. Arlovski avenges a loss to Silva from 2010 and solidifies himself as officially back in contention for the UFC Heavyweight Title currently held by Cain Velasquez (13-1).
The Russian entered the match coming off a disappointing split decision victory over Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub (11-4) at UFC 174 in June, a win that drew criticism for not being worthy of the “main card”. “Bigfoot” came in off an exciting five round draw with No. 7 contender Mark “Super Samoan” Hunt (9-8-1) at UFC Fight Night Hunt vs. Silva last December.
The fight opens with the Brazilian taking the center of the octagon and Arlovski pounces quickly with a right hand. Silva countered with his own right but missed a low kick as Arlovski quicly slipped back out of range. Arlovski came back in with a kick-punch to knock Silva back to take the center. After Silva reclaims center control “Pitbull” began to circle Silva and landed intermittent shots as the round went on.
Near the midpoint of the round Arlovski lands an uppercut on the Brazilian’s chin but is countered with a right hook and is pushed toward the fence by the forward push of his opponent. Silva’s momentum is stopped as Arlovski lands a solid right hand that knocks him to the mat. The Russian dropped to the mat with Silva and landed a series of powerful hammer fists that knocked him unconscious before referee Jerin Valel jumps in to stop the fight.
Arlovski gets the win at 2:59 of the first round in a fashion that more than likely will not draw the same criticism he received from UFC President Dana White after his bout with Schaub.
